Meat and bone meal — a dry, free-flowing product of the heat treatment of non-food raw material of animal origin: bones, trimmings and offal unfit for food use.
The raw material is ground, sterilised under pressure at high temperature, the fat is pressed out, then it is dried and milled. The result is a stable powder high in protein, calcium and phosphorus that keeps for months and is microbiologically safe.
The whole point of the process is that material which would otherwise go to landfill returns to agriculture as a feed ingredient. One tonne of biological waste becomes protein for compound feed instead of an environmental problem.
What it replaces
Part of the soybean meal and fish meal in the ration, plus separate calcium and phosphorus mineral supplements.
What it gives
Animal protein with essential amino acids — above all lysine and methionine, which plant components lack.
Why it pays off
Cheaper than fish meal while playing a comparable role in the ration, and independent of imports — produced inside the country.
What it looks like
A free-flowing powder ranging from light to dark brown with a characteristic smell. Grind — passes a 3 mm sieve.
How to store it
In a dry, ventilated room, separately from food raw materials. Shelf life is 6 months from the production date.
